You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. — MATTHEW 5:14-16
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." — JOHN 8:12
I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. — JOHN 12:46
Light is used in the Bible to describe the very best things. Light is hope, meaning, understanding, permanence, and direction. Darkness represents flailing, disorientation, and lostness. Because we know that people will look to the light, our prayer is that light streams from our members because we are a city set on a hill − a light like Jesus, a warm and well-lit place of safety. May this church − the members that make it up − be heat and light both here and in the world.
